Executive Summary; Technical Report

The purpose of this proposal is to advocate for a change in the throwaway culture from beverage stalls among SITizens in SIT Punggol’s planning team. Singaporeans use at least 1.76 billion plastics such as bottles, bags and other disposable items yearly, in which only less than 20% are recycled. As such, Singapore’s only landfill is now only expected to last till 2035, a 10-years reduction before reaching maximum capacity. The team identified the problem to be due to the amount of plastic waste contributed by beverage consumption from the extensive usage of single-use plastics. This results in plastic pollution being a threat to the ocean which would, in turn, contribute to climate change. Our solution to this problem is the implementation of a drink dispenser system with the integration of the rental cup system, providing an alternative if consumers did not bring along their own cups. Endorsing these proposed solutions would boost the revenue for SIT Punggol, by decreasing the amount of single-use plastic and labour required while increasing the convenience for the consumer.
